There’s a new “Theme Onboarding Platform” coming that should help WordPress theme developers build a better onboarding and setup processes into their themes.
Introducing Merlin WP
Merlin WP (GitHub) is the latest project from Rich Tabor that addresses the arduous and complicated WordPress theme setup and onboarding process. Merlin WP makes installing a new WordPress theme, any recommended WordPress plugins, Customizer settings, widgets, and demo content, an exciting and gratifying user experience.
Merlin WP is Coming in September
Rich is working on the finishing touches, EDD Software Licensing support and a few odds and ends, but he said he’s shooting for a release at the end of August. He’s going to be reaching out about beta testing Merlin WP as well, so if you’re interested head over here to subscribe for updates.
Beta Testers Wanted
Merlin WP is currently in beta on GitHub, it’s not suggested to use Merlin WP in live products just yet. There’s still a few kinks and features to be added. Please remember, if you run into any problems, raise an issue and let Rich know.
Also, be sure to head on over to Rich’s website to learn more him and the services he offers!

Thanks for spreading the word Seth! I’m stoked how the project is coming along and what it’ll do for end users. This one has been a lot of fun to work on!

My pleasure! I’m looking forward to seeing the project launch. I think you’re right, this will be a great thing for end users. I’ve installed and test driven hundreds, or maybe thousands of themes over the years and have always craved for a better, more satisfying experience. It always feels great to buy a nice looking theme, only to be confused and let down when it comes time to set everything up. Even knowing where to start can be a major hurdle for some experienced developers and New WordPress users alike.
