Do you ever ask yourself how a company name was created? I can tell you it’s no walk in the park.
In some industries, such as the event management industry, new business names are so hard to come up with that many people have resorted to posting on Quora, asking for help naming their event management company.
The reason it’s so hard to come up with a name for these types of companies is that of the high rate of competition, all of the best domain names are taken already. Yes, there are some great domain names for sale, at really high prices, as well as the bottom-of-the-barrel names that wouldn’t work so well as a company name. Even many of the bottom-of-the-barrel domain names are registered, making life difficult for newfound event managers and event software companies.
The Story Behind the Name, “Event Espresso”
I don’t have any good name options for you, but I can tell you a little story about how I came up with the name “Event Espresso” for my event registration software company.
For weeks, I had struggled to come up with a new name for the software that also had a dot-com domain name available, with the term “event” or “events” in it, that made sense and that I could register and build a website around. Many hours went by searching for available names online and getting feedback from friends, family, and co-workers about the top names I had thought up that day, or over the past week.
Then, one day, while sitting at the breakfast table, looking at the coffee-themed calendar on the wall, which displayed a fancy cup of coffee and the words, “Espresso!”, I said out loud:
“Event Espresso!”
Once my wife (a fellow coffee lover) heard the name and her face lit up, I knew I had the right name. So I did a quick search on my favorite domain name registrar and lo-and-behold, the name was available. When I shared the name with other friends and family, they loved it too.
My second event ticketing company, Event Smart, which we started a few years later, however, didn’t get such a cool name because we didn’t come up with the name ourselves. Since we were tired of searching for and thinking of new domain names after a few years, we decided to purchase a domain name.
Wrapping Up
Moral of the story is that choosing your event management company name (your future brand name) is a big deal. The words you choose must speak of your values, to your vision and mission…and must be emotive to those whom you intend to attract to your brand. Sometimes a great company name comes to you out of the blue when you’re not thinking about it and sometimes you have to bite the bullet and bring in some outside help or creativity.
Something that might help when coming up with a name for an event company is to look outside the event management industry and continuously play with different terms or word combinations until you’ve found something that rolls of your tongue or brings a smile to someone’s face.
I would love to hear about how you came up with your company name. You can tell me your story in the comments below.
